EUROSEAS 2024: Connecting Southeast Asia with Europe
To foster scholarly collaboration within Europe on Southeast Asian Studies, the European Association for Southeast Asian Studies held its 13th conference in Amsterdam from July 23-25, 2024. This biennial international event serves as a melting pot for specialists on Southeast Asian research from around the world.
Safer Internet Lab was honored to have Medelina Hendytio, CSIS’s Deputy Executive Director for Operations, represent us and join other scholars at the University of Amsterdam. On the second day, Medelina participated in the “Digital Technology and Gender Dynamics in the Workplace in Southeast Asia” laboratory along with other presenters: Ramayda Akmal (Universitas Gadjah Mada), Olivia Prastiti (Populi Center), Treviliana Putri (University of Groningen), Monika Arnez (Palacky University Olomouc), and Yuyun Sunesti (Universitas Sebelas Maret).
On this occasion, Medelina presented her paper titled The Intersection of Gender Dynamics and Digital Technology in the Workplace: Insights from Social Media Narratives and Visual Material. The paper examines how false narratives circulated in social media affect gender inequality in the workplace, including the societal perceptions of women workers and impact women’s career paths. It also explores how employers respond to gendered disinformation and details the actions taken to uphold equality and fairness in the workplace.
This research could enhance our understanding of the relationship between gender dynamics and digital technology. It offers suggestions to platform companies and employers to foster a more inclusive and fair work environment.
