ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute held a hybrid seminar titled “Disinformation and Misinformation in Election Campaigns in Southeast Asia: Lessons Learned and Ways Forward” on August 14, 2024.

The seminar featured three panels, each focusing on different aspects of the issue:

  • Panel 1: Online Political Campaigning: Information Operations and Their Impact
  • Panel 2: Evolving Technologies and Their Impact on the Electoral Information Space
  • Panel 3: Reality Checks: Challenges and Limitations of Existing Approaches to Counter Mis/Disinformation in Elections

Safer Internet Lab’s principal researcher, Beltsazar Krisetya, participated in the third panel alongside Dr. Masato Kajimoto (University of Hong Kong), Dr. Benjamin Loh (ISEAS Visiting Fellow), and Meg Chang (Meta). The panel examined various efforts to combat misinformation and disinformation in elections, including the role of social and digital media platforms in ensuring accountability. On this occasion, Beltsazar emphasized the need for civil society organizations to develop updated strategies to effectively tackle electoral misinformation. He also highlighted the importance of enhanced collaboration among government, industry, and civil society to address these challenges effectively.
